Their job is to bring spirit and pride to their school day in and day out. However, when they're not cheering at football, basketball or volleyball games, they're working hard in the gym to be the best of the best. Between sporting events, UCA, UIL, Regional and NCA competitions, you could say the Central Cheerleaders have their hands full of more than just pom-poms year round.
For 16 years, Matt Escue has coached the Central cheer team. During that time, his teams have won 3 NCA National titles, won the UIL Fight Song contest twice... and that's just the tip of the pyramid. However, for the first time ever, in 2017, his squad took first place at the UCA Southwest Regional Competition on November 19th. Many of their competitors were in the top 5A and 6A teams from last year's UIL State Championships. Their win led them to the NCA State round on December 2nd where they won the highest score of the competition, known as the "herkie high point". Now Matt and his squad are prepping for the UIL competition this January in Fort Worth where they hope to earn their 3rd straight title in the Fight Song Contest, plus much more.
