Shannon plans events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

To honor breast cancer survivors and raise awareness for early detection, Shannon will have several events through the month of October.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Shannon will host its 15th annual Pink Ribbon Run Saturday Oct.1 to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Mainly, it's to pull the community in and keep them educated. And also, particularly with the Pink Ribbon Run, we enjoy celebrating the survivors of breast cancer, particularly all these women that have gone through so much, them and their family members is it's a huge just celebration of life,” Shannon Imaging Center Chief of Women's Imaging, Michelle Snuggs, said.

The run is dedicated to raise awareness for early detection and honor those who fought and survived breast cancer. All of the proceeds raised through the event go to Shannon Imaging Center.

“We started this, the Pink Ribbon Run about 15 years ago, and it was more or less to kind of copy the Komen run that they do every year, and our Pink Ribbon Run is it's fun. People come out, we dress in pink, and we do it for, you know, to celebrate the survivors of breast cancer. It does raise money for the Shannon Imaging Center and it helps us provide education for the patients,” Snuggs said.

She said this year more than 800 people signed up. Although registration is closed, the community can still celebrate by going out to watch and support the event.

“It's been overwhelming. It's it was amazing. Our first year was we didn't expect a huge turnout and we had so many people and it's just continued to grow over the years. This year we have over 800 already signed up, so we're pretty much full," she said.

There will be another event to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month Oct. 8 called the Breast Friends Bash where the community can learn about breast cancer prevention and enjoy free food, giveaways and more.

The Breast Friends Bash will be from 10 a.m. to noon at Shannon Imaging Center, 3301 S. Bryant Blvd.
