UPDATE: Four inmates indicted on charge of assault on public servant after April cell block disturbance

Several correctional officers were taken to Shannon Medical Center for treatment and were released with minor injuries.

TOM GREEN COUNTY, Texas — UPDATE (Aug. 9): Four inmates have been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury after a fight in April 2021 at the Tom Green County Detention Center led to the injury of correctional officers.

On the evening of Thursday, April 22, 2021, the Tom Green County Detention Center Special Operational Response Team responded to a disturbance in the cell block and restored order. Three correctional officers were transported to Shannon Medical Center and treated and released with minor injuries following the incident.

The incident was subsequently investigated by the Tom Green County Criminal Investigation Division and the Tom Green County Detention Center investigator.

As of Aug. 1, 2021, four inmates have been indicted on the offense of assault on a public servant, a third-degree felony. The inmates will be prosecuted by the 51st and 119th Tom Green County District Attorney's Office.

The inmates are:

  • Arturo Garcia Jr., 18
  • Sean Hunter Wisdom, 18
  • Jacob Lewis Garcia, 25
  • Daniel Adam Cheek, 35

The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office remains committed to maintaining a safe environment for both inmates and correctional officers within the Tom Green County Detention Center, a release from the TGCSO said.

ORIGINAL STORY (APRIL 23, 2021): Several inmates at the Tom Green County Detention Center have been charged with assault on a public servant after a disturbance at the facility Thursday evening. Three correctional officers were injured in the incident. 

According to a release from the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office, the detention center's Special Operational Response Team responded to the disturbance at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the center. 

The correctional officers were taken to Shannon Medical Center for treatment and were released with minor injuries.

Three inmates, Arturo Garcia Jr., Sean Hunter Wisdom and Jacob Lewis Garcia, were charged with assault on a public servant, a third-degree felony.

There were no reports of inmate injuries. 

The investigation is ongoing and the cellblock where the disturbance happened remained on lockdown at the time of the release.

More charges are expected to be filed, according to the TGCSO.
