SAN ANGELO, Texas — Gas prices continue to rise in the Concho Valley.

Tuesday, San Angelo reached an average of $3 per gallon for regular unleaded. This is the first time in seven years that the City has seen prices this high.

Crude oil prices are currently at their peak in Texas. The oil is used for energy carriers which can be refined as gasoline.

“The big driver right now is the cost of crude oil which is $82 a barrel. Back when we were in stay at home order in Texas and fewer people were driving at the beginning of the pandemic we saw crude oil prices drop below $50,” , AAA Texas Corporate Spokesperson and Community Relations Daniel Armbruster said.

Armbruster said crude oil makes up 50-60 percent of what drivers pay at the retail pump and if crude oil prices continue to go up, there won't be any relief in the next few weeks when it comes to gas prices.

“I hate to see prices go up but when you’ve lived as long as I have you know that there’s going to be up’s and downs in the price of gasoline. Around San Angelo sometimes when the price goes down then it affects the oil market and those that are in the industry,” Max Parker, San Angelo resident, said.

Gas prices are expected to continue to rise in the next couple of weeks, according to Gas Buddy, a mobile app that helps users find the most affordable gas near them.

Gas Buddy analyst, Patrick De Haan, said a few of the ways to save money is by downloading a mobile gas app, signing up to free loyalty programs gas stations offer, and signing up for credit cards that offer rebates.
