EXCLUSIVE: elderly San Angelo man mauled by 3 pitbulls, roommate says "the back of his head is gone"

One elderly San Angelo man is fighting for his life after being mauled by 3 pit bulls. Our Brenda Matute shares an exclusive from the victims roommate who says this isn't the first time those dogs attack.

SAN ANGELO, TX — "There was blood everywhere, it was terrible, it’s still terrible to me," said Marilyn Aguirri, victims Carlos Garces’ roommate.

The San Angelo Police Department was dispatched to a neighborhood just 5 minutes north of downtown San Angelo Saturday night.

"These two dogs they were barking and barking at that window over there and I was getting on to them because I didn't know why they were barking,” said Aguirri.

A nearby resident called for help while witnessing 56-year-old Carlos Garces being mauled.

"He drove into the driveway and he was banging on the outside of the truck and the dogs came and started trying to bite him and get him, and that's how he got the dogs off of Carlos,” said Aguirri. “If it had not been for Rudy Carlos would be dead."

Aguirri says she was at home waiting for Garces to return from a walk to the grocery store when she noticed flashing lights.

"And so I open the front door and there's like probably 10 to 12 cop cars," said Aguirri.

"And I close the door behind me so my dogs didn’t go out because I know those dogs are over there, and somebody yelled at me ma’am get in your truck!”

"There was blood everywhere, it was everywhere, and he had holes all in his pants.”

"And I’m like, is that Carlos?”

“And they're like Carlos who and I said Carlos Garces and I saw the cop squat down and he asked him if he was Carlos and all he could do was shake his head yes."

"When we got to the hospital and they finally let me see him the back of his head is gone, the back of his head is gone,” said Aguirri.

Neighbors say this is not the first time the pit bulls have attacked

"Those dogs just two weeks ago were let out of animal control after they killed other dogs and now they got Carlos and this should have never happened, they shouldn’t have ever got those dogs back,” said Aguirri.

SAPD has released a statement stating the owner of the pit bulls has now surrendered all 3 of the dogs.

"The neighbor feels really bad too,” said Aguirri.

Brenda: The owner of the dogs?

“Yeah I was yelling at him I said Caleb, go over there I want you to see what your dogs did to my roommate and that’s when he realized it was Carlos,” said Aguirri.

She says her roommate has been transported to a hospital in Fort Worth for treatment.

And as of Monday the 3 pit bulls have been euthanized.
