TEXAS, USA — West Texas Counseling and Guidance Veteran Services announced Tuesday that a food assistance program is available to qualified veterans facing food insecurity.

“We are offering temporary food assistance for veterans and their families,” Paul Keeton, director of WTCG Veteran Services, said in a press release. “This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which is dedicated to ensuring that impacted veterans, service members, and their families thrive long after they return home. Together with the Bob Woodruff Foundation, their partners at Craig Newmark Philanthropies, and generous supporters nationwide, we’re helping fight veteran food insecurity.”

Before receiving funding, applicants will be required to complete a short food insecurity assessment. They will also be required to check-in twice a month, prove active participation toward food stability and submit receipts from purchases prior to receiving additional funding.

“This is our way of telling our fellow veterans ‘we’ve got your six’,” Keeton said. “Our goal is to fill the gap many of our Veterans and their family members are experiencing by providing them with food cards to assist with their food insecurity."

In addition to assisting veterans with food insecurity, Keeton said all participants of the program will receive free case management services, which may include connecting with community resources, help with applying for public assistance programs, or aid with understanding veteran benefits.

The release said services are available to those who were in any branch of the U.S. military (active duty, reserves or National Guard), regardless of time served or character of discharge, as well as immediate family members such as spouses and dependents.

The help is available to any veteran living in the WTCG service area, which includes Tom Green, Coke, Crockett, Irion, Kimble, Mason, McCulloch, Menard, Reagan, Runnels, Schleicher, Sterling and Sutton counties. Edwards, Kinney, Maverick, Terrell and Val Verde counties in Texas and Lea and Eddy counties in New Mexico are also served by the program.

For more information on the program, contact case managers at 325-944-2561 or visit the WTCG Veteran Services Office in the Cactus Hotel, 36 E. Twohig Ave., Suite 110.
