SAN ANGELO, Texas — As many people are gearing up for spring break, local law enforcement is looking to keep everyone safe by cracking down on drunk drivers.
The Texas Department of Transportation is launching a statewide campaign this week to prevent driving under the influence. Tom Green County Sheriff's Office is partnering with TxDOT to encourage people to drive sober during spring break.
“It’s about being highly visible, it's about going out there… and this is on their overtime status you know so they are out there, they are letting people know hey, Tom Green County is out on these roads, we’re looking out for you, we’re looking out for everybody,” TxDOT San Angelo Traffic Safety Specialist Mona Lisa Fischer said.
According to TxDOT, Texas saw 872 DUI/alcohol-related traffic crashes which resulted in 30 fatalities and 107 serious injuries over last year’s spring break.
“Most importantly, we want to remind people not to drink and drive or drive under the influence of any substance, whether it's drugs or even prescription drugs because hey we all share the roadways and we have an obligation as citizens to drive in a way where we don't present a threat to other drivers,” Tom Green County Sheriff Nick Hanna said.
Driving under the influence does not only mean alcoholic beverages, but also prescription and non-prescription medications and controlled substances.
“If you're out and about during this time period and you see a driver that you think may have a problem, whether it's medical or maybe they are drinking and driving, some people are hesitant to call us and our message is, hey, that’s what we’re here for, call us if you see somebody that’s either driving erratically or driving recklessly. That's our job,” Hanna said.
