SAN ANGELO, Texas — Halloween is only a few days away and it’s important for parents to be prepared and take extra precautions to keep their children safe while trick-or-treating. The annual celebration is a much-anticipated night for children and knowing how to stay safe during Halloween is essential.

During the annual festivities, parents have the responsibility to prepare their children for Halloween and keep them protected.

Parents need to be mindful when choosing a costume for their child and making sure they are visible to others. To help ensure child safety while trick-or-treating, authorities advise parents to make sure their child carries a flashlight or glow stick with them at all times.

“We highly recommend that kids wear what they want to wear, we want them to have a happy and safe Halloween. We want the kids to be visible so if they have the opportunity to use glow sticks or carry a flashlight with them it just helps add to the visibility," Abilene Police Department Administrative Sgt. John Ramirez, said.

Ramirez advises parents to always check children’s candy before they consume it. Parents should let their children know they have to wait until they get home to consume any of the treats. Inspecting the candy for any partially-wrapped or tampered candy is important.

“Parents, please examine all of your treats. It's a must to go through all of the candy and examine all of the treats that they have actually gotten. If you see anything that is unpackaged or looks like it might have been tampered with please do not eat it," Ramirez said.

Abilene Police say trunk-or-treats are a safer way for children and parents to enjoy a safe and fun Halloween.
