Alaska Airlines bested the government's latest monthly rankings of big U.S. airlines. The list looks at their on-time performance for January, the latest month for which the data is available. The federal government counts a flight as on time if it arrives no more than 14 minutes behind schedule.

The January results also marked the first time that  a half-dozen smaller airlines have been included in the federal data. Besides the dozen largest airlines that have been reporting these performance rates for years, the list now includes Allegiant, Endeavor, Envoy Air, Mesa Airlines, PSA and Republic Airlines.
