A new program from the Department of Public Safety is hoping to decrease the number of distracted driving accidents.

This program starts Sept. 1 for all persons 18 or older and applies for their driver's license, they have to watch a one hour video about distracted driving and have the certificate of completion, along with the six hour course that's required.

This can be viewed online and has to be done before applying for a license.

Justin Baker with the DPS said distracted driving is anything from, "Anything from adjusting the knobs on the radio, to eating and drinking, reading, reading a text or checking social media."

Last year there were over 190,000 crashes due to distracted driving and over 450 deaths. These numbers are an increase from last year.
