Tom Green County hospitals will be receiving a little help when it comes to helping patients who don't have health insurance. On Tuesday the Tom Green County commissioners court voted unanimously on a new tax.
Hospitals like Shannon will now be charged two point two-three percent on their net patient revenue and there will be a federal match.
Several other counties in the state have already adopted this tax.
Shannon says this will help tremendously with the "free" care that they provide.
CEO Shane Plymell says, “we do about 85 million in charity charges and of that 85 million, our actual cost will be over 20 million.”The new tax is set to begin at the end of this month.
Plymell adds the new tax will be a win-win for both hospitals and patients.
