Sales tax revenue on the rise in San Angelo

Over 58 percent of a state's budget comes from sales tax revenue. Our Malik Mingo shows us how San Angelo spends the money they receive from sales taxes.

The month of March marks the 10th consecutive month San Angelo has had an increase in sales tax revenue.

"Our sales tax for the month of march is up 14.93 percent, said Tina Dierschke, finance director for the city of San Angelo.

According to the city, they see the highest revenue in February because of the holiday season and April because of the rodeo.

"Sales tax effects almost everyone almost everyday," Dierschke said.

Sales tax revenue is the second largest source of revenue for the city's general fund. The largest is property taxes. The increase is attributed to consumer confidence.

"When they see that we are better not only as a city, but nationwide, they feel comfortable spending more money," Dierschke said.

The current sales tax is 8.25%. Of that amount. 6.25% goes to the state, 1/2 a percent goes to the San Angelo Development Corporation, and 1/2 a percent goes to Tom Green County. The city gets the remaining one percent.

"About 52 percent of the general fund goes towards public safety, which includes police and fire," Dierschke said.

Other departments that make up the fund are street and maintenance and parks and recreation.

"Maintenance of the parks, and the nature center," Dierschke said. "Things like that." she said.

The city hopes to continue seeing an increase in their sales tax revenue. They have already began the financial planning for 2019 and they want to be conservative with how much they allocate for sales taxes.

"We don't want to have any type of burden later on," Dierschke said.
