ABILENE, Texas — Winter weather can lead to icy roads and slippery conditions.

West Texas might experience freezing rain, fog and some light snow Nov. 18 and 19, while the Big Country has the risks rain and snow, so the Texas Department of Transportation Abilene has been preparing the roads as a precautionary measure.

Crews have been pretreating Interstate 20, highways and farm-to-market roads with brine (water and salt solution) after recent predictions from the National Weather Service.

Brine is sprayed from TXDOT trucks onto the roads to help ensure snow and ice doesn't stick directly on the pavement. Drivers should be cautious of slow-moving TXDOT vehicles on the roads during this time.

TXDOT has also provided tips for safe driving in winter conditions, including checking tires, fluids and windshield wipers, filling up gas, using a seatbelt at all times, being cautious and patient, breaking and speeding up without being overly aggressive and avoiding the use of cruise control.

They also suggest to stay inside if travel is unnecessary.
