MARFA, TX - From Customs and Border Protection: "Big Bend Sector Border Patrol agents were busy over the Veterans Day holiday weekend apprehending over 100 people attempting to illegally enter the country, and seizing over 1,000 pounds of marijuana.
On Friday, Van Horn Station agents seized 600 pounds of marijuana in two separate cases. The marijuana was being carried in large backpacks by persons who had crossed the border illegally. Agents were able to disrupt the smuggling attempts before the marijuana could be picked up at a location along I-10.
Sierra Blanca agents seized marijuana in three separate cases. On Friday, agents working the immigration checkpoint on I-10 followed a canine alert that led to the seizure of 84 pounds of marijuana concealed in the door panels of Dodge Durango. The load was driven by a United States citizen from Fort Worth, TX.
On Sunday, agents took 60 pounds of marijuana from the luggage compartment of a commercial bus-line. The owner of the suitcases filled with the contraband was not on board. In addition, on Sunday, Sierra Blanca agents working in the brush near the U.S./Mexico border arrested five Mexican Nationals attempting to backpack 276 pounds of marijuana to I-10.
On a final note, agents working in Sierra Blanca, Van Horn, Marfa, Presidio and Sanderson all made apprehensions of illegal border crossers who entered the Big Bend region over the weekend. Agents from Amarillo responded to calls for assistance from Grey County Sheriff’s office after several subjects bailed out of a pickup on I-40, during a traffic stop. Border Patrol took custody of six subjects who had recently illegally entered the country in Arizona.
Acting Chief Patrol Agent Victor M. Velazquez said, “What a great job by all the men and women of the Big Bend Sector. I also want to thank those Veterans who serve in law enforcement who were working over the Veterans Day holiday weekend protecting our country and keeping our communities safe.”
Big Bend Sector agents patrol 510 miles of the southwest border which extends from Sierra Blanca, Texas to Sanderson. It is the largest Border Patrol Sector on the U.S-Mexico border."
