"Cite and Release" program allowing a citation for those found in possession of marijuana

Texas news

SAN ANGELO, TX - While legalization of marijuana has seen an overwhelming amount of opposition in Texas this new program could be the gateway into more lenient laws.

After a city council vote, anyone in Dallas County caught with 4 ounces or less of marijuana will be given a chance to pay a fine instead of spending a night in jail.

This measure set to go into effect December 1st.

Although Dallas is hundreds of miles away from San Angelo, many wonder if this is the small step Texas needs to slowly inch its way toward legalization.

Tom Green County officials declined to comment on the possibility of a similar program being implemented in the Concho Valley.

For now, possession of marijuana continues to be against the law with penalties ranging from a misdemeanor to a felony.
