Hardin Simmons Researchers Study Ranch Soil

ABILENE, Tx -- The Dixon Water Foundation just gave Hardin Simmons researchers some much needed help. The researchers received around 95 hundred dollars to start a study on soils at a Runnels County ranch. Science majors spent part of the spring collecting samples of the soil. The study will look at how all the animals in the soil's ecosystem are living. They are hoping the research will help ranchers know a little more about their soil.

"When you think about drought, if your soils are not managed properly and they don't hold a lot of organic material like bacteria and fungi, then when it does rain that soil cannot hold onto the moisture," says Marla Potess, Environmental Science Professor.

Potess says she wants to find out if pesticides and other thing that are put in the soil is negatively affected the soil.
