Keeping dollars local makes sense

SAN ANGELO, TX - "Restaurants, boutiques, salons, we have some doctor's offices, a local ER,” Liz Calhoun, founder of San AngeLocal said.

Those are just a few kinds of places San AngeLocal card holders can get a 10 to 30 percent discount. But that's just the beginning.

"Free potted plants, free appetizers, free deserts,” Calhoun said.

October is San AngeLocal’s one year anniversary. Currently they have 1,500 cardholders and 76 local businesses participating. Founder Liz Calhoun says is a win-win situation for everyone involved.

"Besides just helping your neighbor it's good for you because it keeps money in your pocket, and it keeps money in our town,” Calhoun said.

So just how important is keeping money local? According to the Business Alliance for Local Living economies: for every $100 spent at a local business, $67 stay in the community. Compare that to chain stores, where if you spend $100 there, only $32 stay in the community.

"It's exhausting,” Steve Stango, owner of Stango’s Coffee Shop said.

Steve Stango first opened up his coffee shop about 5 years ago but it took about a year of planning before that. He's had to make some changes for it to all work - including scaling back on hours and even switching the menu.

"I'm glad I switched over to pizza. If I didn't switch over to pizza I don't think I'd still be here,” Stango said.

If he only had one chance to persuade someone to shop locally, what would he tell them?

"To keep me here and to keep all the other people around here,” Stango said.
