SAN ANGELO, TX - They're one of the only local Mariachi bands in the Concho Valley.
"This is only our fourth year of the program right now," Rosendo Ramos, mariachi director at San Angelo Independent School District, said.
Ramos lead the mariachi class and program at Lake View High School and Lincoln Middle School.
He says over the past four years the number of students in the program, since its reboot, has grown.
The program has now more than 130 students enrolled within the district.
"In this county we're the only mariachi group here," Ramos said.
Ramos' advanced class at Lake View High consist of 40 students.
One of those students is Belen Hernandez, 15, the group's student president.
"I would say my favorite thing about it is the variety of instruments that are here," Hernandez said.
Meanwhile as the students learn how to play the instruments they're also getting a lesson in history and culture.
"Not everybody knows the Hispanic culture, everybody has different perspectives on it, and how it should be," Hernandez said. "Playing this music is like, this is what it is, this is something that represents us as Hispanic people," she said.
