NFL players' protest sparks reaction

NFL players kneel in opposition to social injustice, and to President Trump's opposition to kneeling during the national anthem. Some veterans disagree and say it's a sign of disrespect to our country and our military members.

SAN ANGELO, TX - It's at the center of a major controversy: stand or kneel during the national anthem.

"I would have to agree with everything about kneeling, and I don't disagree with people who stand for the national anthem," Daylon Whitley, who agrees with kneeling, said.

The controversy is in response to what President Trump said on Friday, that players who protest the national anthem should be fired.

His comments originated with Colin Kaepernick's kneeling during The Star-Spangled Banner, last season which spread throughout the NFL.

"I don't view it as disrespectful to our troops or anything like that just because they are fighting for our right to kneel as well as they fight for our right to stand," Whitley said.

Many who disagree with the players who kneeled say it's a sign of disrespect to our troops.

"Freedom of speech is one of the freedoms we did fight for, and there is so many different ways they can go about expressing their opinions," Juan Rubio, veteran, said.

Rubio says the national anthem represents more than our country but also our past and present service members and our first responders.

"That's what it stands for," he said. "For people who have sacrificed their life, time for our nation."
