BALLINGER, TX - One person is dead after attempting to shoot at Runnels County Deputies.
This according to the Runnels County Sheriff’s Office. They say on February 2nd, around 9:20 a.m., dispatch got a call about a person who was in mental distress. The caller said that person fired a shot in a home with the person’s family members inside. After that, the family members left the home. Runnels County Sheriff’s Deputies and Winters Police Officers responded to the home on FM 2405. That’s when they saw the person inside with a rifle.
Law Enforcement Officers tried to communicate with the person but they did not respond. The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office was called and their tactical team and negotiator responded. State Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers also arrived to assist.
The person was still inside and authorities say they were pacing back and forth then pointed the rifle at officers through a window. Around 1:15 p.m., the person walked out of the home, stood on the patio and took aim at the deputies. The deputies fired back and one round hit and killed the person. The body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s office in Mesquite, Texas for an autopsy. The Texas Rangers are investigating and no names or identifying information has been released at this point.
