San Angelo Police Department is giving away free gun locks

SAPD and the organization, Child Safe, are working together to educate gun owners.

SAN ANGELO - San Angelo Police Department is giving away free gun locks that can be used on a variety of firearms.

A partnership between SAPD and the organization Child Safe has influenced this free giveaway. These locks are available at the police station and all you have to do is tell them you need one.

Not only is this partnership about safety but education. Even though these two organizations give gun owners the tools and advice to stay safe, ultimately, it's the gun owners responsibility at the end of the day.

SAPD Officer Tracy Gonzalez said, "They're not going to do any good unless you have a frank discussion with your children about firearm safety, and the dangers that can come with that and really drive it home that guns are not toys."

Some more tips on firearm safety include, keeping ammunition in a separate area, away from the firearms itself. Also, keep your finger off the trigger, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and treat every firearm as if it's loaded.
