SAN ANGELO, TX - Get your wallets out and pack your patience. If you’re one of the nearly 4 million Texans planning to travel this holiday you'll want to load up on gas and time.
“Holiday traffic is going to greatly increase over the next few days especially Wednesday, being one of the busiest travel days of the year,” said Sergeant Justin Baker.
Experts are saying the most popular way to travel is by car with nearly 46 million Americans getting behind the wheel.
"Make sure you have a vehicle that’s properly maintained and road worthy,“ adds Baker.
In case you forgot, as of September 1st, texting and driving is illegal in the state of Texas.
"We want to avoid all types of cell phone distractions. We mean checking social media, checking texts, receiving texts, and taking pictures while driving on the road,” said Baker.
Last year the Department of Public Safety issued over 51,000 citations and made 275 DWI arrests.
"We want to see all those numbers over this week be zero, no fatalities, no crashes, just safe drivers out there," said Baker.
And a reminder that drinking and driving is against the law. We can also prevent fatal accidents by simply buckling up.
“Make sure that those children below 8 years of age are in a proper child safety seat, or booster seat and make sure that those seats are properly installed in the vehicle,” said Baker.
This year thanksgiving will be sunny and we won’t have to worry about wet or icy roads but still remain alert.
