Olympic Hopefuls Try Out in Austin

Some Austin athletes got the chance to try out for Team USA this weekend!

AUSTIN - It was an unusual way to spend a weekend.

“I’m trying out for the Olympics.”

The U.S. Olympic Committee is looking for two participants to join Team USA in the upcoming Olympic games.

They hosted tryouts at 24 Hour Fitness in south Austin on Saturday…

“I realize it’s a super long shot, but I think I would regret it if I didn’t try out. I love the Olympics.”

Inviting gold medal hopefuls to put their skills to the test.

“I did the vertical jump to see how I can reach to the top…I love to compete with the best, and that’s where the best is.”

This is the first time in history the committee has held open tryouts. Competitors go through rigorous testing, including sprinting, broad jumping, squatting and more. Then they submit times on the Olympic scouting website.

Marissa Hostin is confident she’ll be chosen.

“Oh, I will for sure make it. Yeah, I’m like, all-star athlete,” Hostin said.

One hundred athletes will be chosen to move on to the next round of testing, where they will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado to undergo the same challenges Olympic athletes face.

From there, one man and one woman will be invited to participate in either bobsled, skeleton, track cycling or rugby in 2018, 2020 and 2022.

“I fully anticipate to be in the Olympics 2020,” Hostin said.

Athletes who were not able to make it to tryout in person can also apply through the online portal at TeamUSA.org.
