326th District Court Judge Candidates

ABILENE (KXVA FOX) – The 326th District Court Judge seat is open for election tomorrow.

The position has been filled for three decades by Judge Aleta Hacker, and now with her retirement, three candidates are battling for the bench.

Candidate Mary Ann Fergus has wanted to run for a while.

"I had actually planned to run some time ago and the timing wasn't right, but this time is the time and I'm ready to take that office and be a good judge," she said.

"This is what I do. The last three years I've handled family cases, and so this was just an extension of that," explained candidate Claire Mehaffey.

Candidate Paul Rotenberry said it was his wife who gave him the confidence.

"Frankly, my wife was the first one that said something to me about it six years ago. She was the one who pointed out to me that my life had uniquely prepared me for this."

All candidates are very aware of the importance of this position.

"As a judge, you are given the opportunity to make the right decision, the best decision. I think it's important that we not only make the right decision, but the perfect decision for those kids," Mehaffey said.

"It's very important that we have solid thinking and solid decisions come out of this court," expressed Rotenberry.

"It's an important position because I want my conservative values to show through, and I want to be a leader," said Fergus.

Professional experience is only one part of what makes them qualified. The attorneys have each had their own life experiences to help prepare them for the bench seat as well.

"I understand what it means for a boy to grow up in a home without his dad, coupled with my professional experience, I think I'm uniquely qualified for this position," highlighted Rotenberry.

"Since I have this vast experience in business law, I feel like I am able to pick up what's going on and try to dig deeper to see what's really going on. I came from a divorced family, I know what it likes to grow up without parents," expressed Fergus.

"I feel that not only my experience within the family court system, but my experience in life has really placed me in a position to make the best decisions for all families in this community," Mehaffey said.
