Brownwood has a new program to prevent the jail from becoming over crowded.

The jail has come close to reaching maximum capacity.

Community leaders decided to try and stop this growing problem.

Brown county judges came together and started a new program to help prevent any future crowding. The program has helped open up five beds.

The program allows inmates of lesser offense without money for bond to be released. Nita Richardson runs the new program and chooses which inmates are released and which ones have to stay. She said she usually consults with judges for advice. she has allowed five inmates to bond out since Tuesday.

According to jail administrators crime in Brown County is growing.

Tuesday the jail had 161 inmates, that's down from last week.

But here's the problem, the jail can only hold up to 196 people.

Jail administrators hope with this new program the jail won't reach maximum capacity.
