TX -- Colonel Michael Bobb Starr is back at Dyess Air Force Base for the fourth
time in his military career. He joined
the Air Force twenty-two years ago.
"There was an evil empire, the President told us there was an evil empire," Colonel Starr explained. "I have always believed that we were created to be free and if there's evil in the world, then that should be confronted."
Colonel Starr said one of the biggest things at Dyess right now is the B-1 Bomber with an Integrated Battle Station Upgrade. It's features include full color displays, moving maps, and a new diagnostics system.
"The warrior with the best information wins, so these are all modifications designed to get better information," Colonel Starr said.
He says that it will take about six years for all aircrafts to undergo the upgrade and the first set of aircrafts will be ready to deploy, if needed, in the early part of 2016.
"Figuring out how to do this and incorporate this modification and do it well, it's not trivial, it literally will change the entire business we do in the airplane."
Colonel Starr said he's already accomplished everything he's ever dreamed of in the Air Force, which forces him to question, why do I keep doing this?
"The answer that I came up with is I like solving tough problems, and I like investing in junior leaders. This job in particular gives me enormous influence over that generation, and I'll be using my time here to be the leader that they deserve and to be the best leader that I can be for them."
