Two fires left families in Abilene devastated after much of their belongings were destroyed.

KXVA wants to keep you and your family safe so we sent out our reporter Tabetha Cain to find out how you can stay safe.

Firefighters said the fire at Mill Creek apartments was started by a neighbor's cigarette.

Something that could have been avoided.

The cause of another house fire in the 1600 block of Rainey Road is still under investigation but sources said they think a space heater in the chicken coop maybe to blame.

Another case where the fire didn't have to happen.

Firefighters not only put out fires but they also help educate the public on fire safety, since more than 50 percent of are preventable.

The department has a side dedicated to educating the public.

Kara Hunter said you should always have a plan incase a fire does happen with two exits out of every room.

She says these two fires caused more than $130,000 worth of damages.

The Mill Creek fire there estimating damages at over $100,000. And then the fire in the 1600 block of Rainey Road the rough estimate is about $30,000 worth of damages.

All of this can be prevented.

Fire detectors can cost as low as 8 bucks. Preventing hundreds of dollars worth of damages saving lives and memories.

Hunter said having a fire extinguisher and a smoke detector are a few ways to help prevent a major loss.
