Should Pool Owners be Stopped?

Should Pool Owners be Stopped?

Posted: Updated:
Memorial Day weekend is around the corner and people are looking forward to pools and BBQ's. If we don't get enough rain in the coming weeks, we may have a summer without chlorine and diving boards.

The city is opening it's pool for the summer season, but after we announced it on Facebook, people were questioning why pools are even allowed to be filled with drought level 3 right around the corner. Toni Fox, the Water Conservation Manager, says at this rate it could happen within weeks,
"If we don’t get any rain, if we keep using the water, evaporation until we get under 12-months supply of water, that will trigger Drought 3 level stage.”

Would Drought 3 force pool owners to drain their pools? City Council seat-holder Johnny Silvas says it’s all hypothetical especially with rain in the forecast, “When drought level 3 comes, if it comes, we don’t know yet. The clouds are coming upon us and we’re all praying for rain.”

Silvas says nothing beats refreshing in a pool, but we’ve got to have priorities, "That’s just a luxury to have and that’s nice to have especially out here in West Texas, but there comes a point where you’ve got to really think hard like do you want to drink water or do you want to splash around in it?”

Pools may seem like a waste of water but some pool businesses are still doing their part to help conserve this precious resource.

“And in the last three years, we’ve estimated that we’ve saved San Angelo approximately 200,000 gallons just in conserving the existing water in swimming pools.”

Pool Pro’s invested in 10,000 gallon bladder tanks. These tanks hold water from pools while they're undergoing maintenance so the water isn’t drained and wasted. Trish says her business suffers backlash--but it's not the only one that depends on water to stay afloat.

“Car washes, golf courses and a wide arrange of other businesses that is affected by this.”

Silvas says the drought may put an end to clean cars and canonballs, but in the meantime, it’s up to the man in the sky, “We have to put it in God’s hands if he wants to bring us rain, he’ll do it... pray for rain, that's the main message that's out there."
