Abilene, TX -- It's a typical high school graduation rehearsal for Abilene High Senior Haley Tompkins, waiting amongst her peers for practice to be over.
Little does she know, right across the grassy knoll, her older brother lance is also waiting. Waiting just five more minutes, after more than a year, to give his sister a graduation present she will never forget.
"She's a lot like me so I’m thinking she's going to be pretty nervous, she might be in shock. That's probably what's going to happen, a little bit embarrassed, but she'll be happy,” said Private Tompkins minutes before the surprise reveal.
Private Tompkins had been stationed in Germany, and will stay there for the next three years. This is his first time being home.
"I’m pretty excited, a little nervous, but excited."
Haley stood in front of her classmates thinking she was going to be interviewed about her future after graduation. But when she was told to turn around, she saw her brother coming down the aisle of the auditorium.
After seconds of realizing what was going on, she ran to him and they embraced each other with tears.
"I was like, oh my gosh, what is he doing here?,” said Haley. “I had no idea, I thought she was just trying to embarrass me in front of everyone, make me stand here, and make me interview, but it was worth it. It took me a minute to realize who it was, but i was excited."
Private Tompkins is home for twelve days before going back to Germany.
