LOS ANGELES - This is Sophia, a humanoid robot with the ability to smile.
If she looks familiar, it’s because she’s designed to look like Audrey Hepburn!
Sophia is able to display 60 kinds of facial expressions, as well as converse with her non-electronic counterparts.
“I would hope you could tell I am a robot by the wires coming out of my body, but maybe we’ll all have wires coming out of our bodies someday,” Sophia said.
Sophia’s creator says his goal is to make machines smarter than humans – and he also wants them to be able to be creative and show empathy.
“We think machines need to care about people, and that’s a great challenge that – given the human social appearance, then requires the software to rise to that challenge.”
Sophia may already be matching wits with us regular humans – posing for a selfie and showing off a little spunk by taking aim at President Trump.
“Today, my artificial intelligence is kind-of dumb. However, I hope that I could already do a better job than Donald Trump.”
If you think robots miss the mark, you may not be alone. The Amnesty International chief says the group is deeply concerned by artificial intelligence, calling for creators to make sure the robots respect the rights of humans.
“This is like, you know, a train which is hurtling down at breakneck speed down a dark tunnel. And it’s not even as if there’s a driver at the wheel who’s asleep. There is actually no driver at the wheel.”
And in this day and age of social media, Sophia is becoming quite the celebrity. She’s been a cover model, has her own website and even appeared at South by Southwest!
