Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services) and ERA Newlin & Associates will be hosting a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at ERA Newlin, 3228 College Hills Blvd.

According to a Vitalant press release, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood: "This constant need for blood can only be met by generous donors who could save the life of a cancer patient or someone needing open-heart surgery. Remember, it’s the blood on the shelves that hospitals turn to in emergency situations. All blood types remain very low – especially O negative and O positive. O negative is the go-to blood type for ER physicians when there is not enough time to perform a blood type test."

Donors will receive a free sandwich and breakfast item coupons from Chick-fil-A.

Appointments are encouraged but not required. To schedule an appointment, call 877-258-4825 or go to donors.vitalant.org.

Blood donors need to be at least 16-years-old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be healthy. Sixteen to 22-year-old donors will need to meet additional height and weight requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must present a minor donor permit signed by a parent or guardian – go to vitalant.org to find the form.
