University Theatre at Angelo State University will present the satirical drama, “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui,” for its first fall 2019 production.

The production begins Thursday, Oct. 10, in the ASU Auditorium in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Avenue N; and will run for one weekend only, Oct. 10-13, with show times at 8 p.m. Oct. 10-12 and a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee on Oct. 13.

Tickets are $10 for the general public; $5 for non-ASU students and ASU Activity Card holders; and free for ASU students and Arts at ASU subscribers.

Written by German author Bertolt Brecht, the play has been performed on Broadway with Christopher Plummer in the lead role, as well as off-Broadway.

Based in 1941, the play chronicles the rise of Arturo Ui, a fictional 1930s Chicago mobster and provides a shuddering and accurate parallel between Adolf Hitler and his henchmen on one hand, and the old crime lords of Chicago on the other. The Cauliflower Trust in Chicago is in need of help and turns to Arturo Ui to begin a “protection” campaign. Ui’s henchmen look astonishingly like Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Goring. Their activities include “accidental” fires and a St. Valentine’s Day massacre.

The ASU student cast includes Nathaniel Brown, Hunter McMillian, E.J. Mendoza, Vero Villalobos, Robert Flores, Alex Bilbrey, Jennie Wagner, Jordan Parks, Corbin Stevens, Chloe Choate, Clinton Moore, Katie Coldiron, Sidney Timmer, Erica Green, Sam Foster, Anthony Galindo, Chelsea Chappell and Rodrigo Lara, under the direction of Daniel Anderson, instructor of theatre.

Tickets can be reserved by Arts at ASU subscribers beginning Monday, Sept. 30, at the ASU box office in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive. Ticket sales open for the general public on Oct. 2. The box office is open 2-6 p.m. weekdays.
