We wanted to give you a few things to think about the next time you’re at the grocery store this year.

GOBankingRates compiled a list of supermarket buys in 2020 that are a waste of money.

Here are some of the highlights that could help save you money this year...

  • Imported olive oil: Because olive oil consumption has tripled in the U.S. in the last three decades, you can find plenty of domestic oils from places like California that may have more rigorous health standards, freshness dates and are less expensive.
  • Shredded cheese: it's something we almost always have in the refrigerator. It’s convenient, sure, but think about all the additives and fillers that come along with it; not to mention the higher price tag. Your best bet is to buy an eight-ounce block of cheese and grate it yourself. You’ll actually end up saving money and time because you’re getting more cheese off the block. That means fewer trips to the store.
  • Watch for eye-level items: According to Consumer Reports, companies pay retailers more for the best product placement at eye-level. So you could end up paying more for something of equal quality, just because it’s a little bit higher on the shelves.
