Madison Middle School teacher of the year at home and in the classroom

Special education and 8th grade math lab teacher at Madison Middle School gets a surprise recognition.

ABILENE, Texas — An Abilene teacher got a sweet surprise earlier this week as she was recognized as outstanding teacher of the year by the local nonprofit, Reach for a Difference.

Nichole Anderson teaches special education and 8th grade math lab at Madison Middle School.

"She puts her heart and soul into her job and makes it clear to each child daily that they are important to her and that they can make a difference in the world,” said Reach founder, Sara Collins.

"I love the group of kids I have and so when I was awarded that...it just took me by surprise, completely unexpected,” said Anderson.

With seven children of her own, the love for teaching started at home. Two of her children fall under the autism spectrum and inspired her to get her masters.

"They're no different, they really aren't any different, I have the same expectations for both of my kids as I do for all seven of them,” said Anderson.

She said it gives parents relief to know she understands what they go through every day.

Along with her recognition, Anderson will be leading the upcoming, Big Country Walk for Autism being held on Saturday, April 27th at Hardin Simmons University Stadium.
