Wild fires don't just happen in rural areas. There are certain parts of the city where a wild fire can occur.
We are approaching a time of year when vegetation is dry and dead which provides fuel for wild fires, according to Tom Green County Emergency Management Coordinator, Steve Mild.
Mild said there are certain things you can do to protect your home from a wild fire in the city limits.
You need to have a defensible space. That means an area clear of limbs and debris surrounding your house so, if a fire does start firefighters are able to fight the flames in a clear space.
Mild recommends clearing out dead leaves and debris from gutters and make sure dead brush and trash are also cleared from around your house. All of these provide fuel for fires and if embers from a nearby fire land on dead debris it can easily ignite.
