ABILENE, Texas — The Abilene Cultural Affairs Council is bringing the Storybook Capital of America to life as it kicks off its 8th annual Children’s Art and Literacy Festival.

Thousands of people are expected to be in attendance to explore downtown and its numerous children’s events.

The festival kicked off with a costume contest and the storybook parade. This year, the parade includes over 30 entries and more than 500 people.

"Saint John's Episcopal School is the sponsor for the parade, and so they provide a lot of the funding,” parade chair, Melody Kern said.

The Big Country Home Educators provide the costumes for the parade.

“Home-schooled families from the Big Country come and walk in the parade as our costume characters,” Kern said.

Over 6,000 people have signed up for the festival activities.
