‘Verify Road Trip' Preview: Fracking and Earthquakes

Fracking is the topic of tonight's Verify Road Trip with David Schechter. KIDY’s JJ Maldonado gives us a preview.

Fracking is the process of injecting liquid into subterranean rock to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas.

It’s a term most Texans know about.

But there is some concern the process is the culprit behind a growing number of earthquakes.

That’s the topic of tonight’s Verify with David Schechter.

KIDY’s JJ Maldonado gives us a preview.

David and I had the chance to talk about his latest road trip from Texas to Oklahoma.

Yesterday, Verify took us to Marfa, Texas to find out if those lights were a mystery. And it appears they are.

Tonight, David and a special guest will try to verify: does fracking cause earthquakes? It’s a controversial issue, not only in Texas and Oklahoma, but around the country.

And tonight, David’s guest — who is not a journalist, but a mom and marketing executive — will try to verify if fracking is the cause of recent earthquakes felt from the Lone Start State to our neighbors in the north.

“So, here you have a real person talk to these state officials and trying to figure out for herself. They’re not saying the same thing, so what’s going on here?” Schechter said.

“And where exactly did you go in Oklahoma?”

“We went to Prague, which is — we went to Oklahoma City, a little to the east of Norman, and in 2011, they had what was the largest earthquake in state history, you know, chimneys had toppled over. It’s sort-of a rural area, but this one home was particularly badly damaged.”

And following tonight’s story, David and his guest, Mesha, will be livetweeting and on our Facebook page, taking all your questions about fracking and what they were able to verify.
