First babies born in 2023 bring the new year in with style

Camila Hametner and Gianna Muhimbare were born almost 20 minutes apart at different hospitals on Jan. 1, 2023.

AUSTIN, Texas — New Year's Day of 2023 rang in with some of Austin's first-born babies born almost 20 minutes apart, shortly after the clock struck midnight.

Gianna Muhimbare was born at 12:29 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2023, making her the first baby born in the St. David's Healthcare system this year.

Gianna Muhimbare, who weighs 8.4 pounds, was born at the St. David's South Austin Medical Center. She was delivered by Dr. Sapna Bhagat.

“When we welcomed our daughter, Gianna, into the world, we had no idea she was the first baby born at a St. David’s HealthCare hospital in 2023," Raissa Muhimbare, Gianna Muhimbare's mother, said. "We are grateful to the medical staff at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center for providing such wonderful care. Today is both exciting and surreal.”

Born just under 20 minutes later at a different hospital was Camila Hametner. Hametner was born at 12:48 a.m., also on Jan. 1, making her the first baby born in the Ascension Seton medical group for the new year.

Weighing 7.5 pounds and measuring 22.25 inches long, she was born to her parents Ashley Corona and Brent Hametner at the Ascension Seton Medical Center.

Dr. Megan McCoin delivered her to her family.
