Dallas natives opening up a BBQ restaurant on Chadbourne St.

As expansion continues downtown, one restaurant owner saw Chadbourne Street as the perfect place to open his business

SAN ANGELO, Texas — After two years of preparation, Dallas natives Blake Woodson and Ben Wolf are opening their barbecue restaurant on the historical Chadbourne Street.

Both Woodson and Wolf found their passion in smoked barbecue and over two years later, the Southern Smoke BBQ is finally set to open in a few days.

Although San Angelo isn’t where the owners were born or raised, Woodson says the minute he landed in the Concho Valley, it felt like home. 

“I didn’t choose San Angelo but San Angelo chose me. With the Plateau Brewing partnership  and the support of this community, I feel we can’t do anything but succeed,” Woodson mentioned. 

Chadbourne Street is historical in San Angelo and some say traffic on the street died down for a few years. But with the recent construction near completion and potential expansion of historical downtown, CEO of San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Walt Koeing says a business like the Smokehouse is the perfect addition to Chadbourne Street.

“We have the largest membership downtown in our 100 year history. We’re really excited to see the great developments and the infrastructure happening on that street is really looking beautiful. We hope this will represent a continuation of local businesses opening up on Chadbourne Street,” Koeing shared. 

As Woodson reflected on the road to opening day, he shared his appreciation for the countless business owners in the area that were open to helping him and giving him advice whenever he needed it. 

“It’s that small town community that I have always wanted and people surrounding me with positive words and advice that even helped me grow as a business owner. I am so glad to be here and I’m ready to put in the work this weekend,”

Southern Smoke BBQ is set to open at noon Saturday, Sept. 18, at 215 S. Chadbourne St.
