SAN ANGELO, Texas — San Angelo does not have a single detox facility that can serve members of the community who are uninsured or cannot pay out-of-pocket.

The Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council for the Concho Valley. also known as ADAVCC, is trying to change that. Although the detox facility has been constructed, there are currently not enough funds to make it fully-operational.

"If someone comes in and they need detox and they don't have insurance and can't pay out of pocket, we have to refer them out of town," Courtney Bingham, ADAVCC prevention coordinator, said.

While the rehabilitation services at ADAVCC are free and open to people who are uninsured or low-income, people seeking ADAVCC rehabilitation services are required to go through detox before they can be helped.

"For years now it's been very apparent in the work that we do that a detox center is needed, and we hear all the time from people in the community who are just waiting for it to open because there is such a need," Bingham said.
