ABILENE, Texas — The 2020 Christmas Lights Parade was canceled, however, Abilene residents will have the opportunity to participate in holiday activities during the City Sidewalks event.

According to an Abilene Downtown Association press release, the event will begin when the nation observes Small Business Day Saturday, Nov. 28.

Mayor Anthony Williams will flip the switch and light up the 62-foot tree on the south side of the Abilene Convention Center that evening. Downtown will also come alive with lights.

There will be several special events downtown throughout December including a 5K run, children’s garden party, pet day, an adult pub crawl, outdoor Las Posadas procession, Christmas movies, as well as other events.

Attendees can vote in three categories for the best-decorated downtown shop window from Nov. 28-Dec. 13. The categories are downtown holiday windows, displays and lighting.

“We’re grateful to all the generous businesses that stepped up to finance the holiday lights downtown this year,” Mari Cockerell, City Sidewalks 2020 Committee chair, said.

The celebration was made possible because of a collaboration with the Abilene Downtown Association, businesses and support from Chamber of Commerce affiliates. The decorations were underwritten by two anonymous donors, First Baptist Church, Black Plumbing, Maverick Saw Cutting & Core Drilling, JAR Land & Investments, AEP-Texas, Christmas Decor by Lone Star Electric and Atmos Energy.
