SAN ANGELO, Texas — For the sixth year, San Angelo Elks Lodge #1880 opened its doors to host its "Home Away from Home" event for Goodfellow Air Force Base soldiers, airmen, Marines and sailors who could not go home for Christmas.

At least two dozen service men and women walked through the doors before noon to partake in the festivities, all put together by the Elks, along with volunteers from other service organizations including San Angelo Lions Clubs. Donations of gifts, gift cards and desserts were all made by the community.

Elks Public Relations Chair Harry Thomas said this year's early turnout was a little less than expected, but the group will continue to host this event to make sure everyone has a good Christmas.

After the meal and dessert, there were games and gift giveaways for the servicemembers in attendance. Everyone walks away from the with at least one gift and a full belly.

"Home Away from Home" is only one of the events the Elks host throughout the year. The lodge holds a free monthly breakfast for veterans and first responders and other events for the community.
