SAN ANGELO, Texas — The San Angelo Hispanic Heritage Museum and Cultural Center is hosting a virtual Dia de los Muertos celebration from Oct. 29-31.
According to a press release from the organization, the event will consist of different activities which include musical performances, free art kits and demonstrations, as well as an educational understanding of why the event is celebrated.
A decorated ofrenda (altar) will be available for viewing at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, 1 Love St., and will serve as the live component of the event.
Residents can take framed photos, with no glass, in memory of loved ones between Oct. 29 and Nov. 2 and they must also be picked up. SAMFA and the San Angelo Hispanic Heritage Museum and Cultural Center noted in the release they will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.
In addition to the altar, a virtual and non-competitive 5K/1-mile walk/run will be held with a $35 entry fee. Early registration ends Oct. 16. Those who register early will receive a T-shirt. Entries after Oct. 16 will receive the T-shirt Nov. 15.
Packets pick up will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at the San Angelo Visitor Center, 418 W. Avenue B. The run will begin and end at the altar at SAMFA.
Photos from the walk can be submitted to be shared on Facebook and the San Angelo Hispanic Heritage Museum and Cultural Center website. The online signup link can be found on the website. For additional information, contact Blanca De La Rosa at 325-656-3440.
Dia de los Muertos shirts will also be available for purchase and can be picked up on Oct. 28 and 29 at 24 W. Concho Ave.
The organization is partnering with Trufan Bros Tattoo Shop to raffle a $250 value tattoo and the winner will be featured in the virtual Dia de los Muertos event. Tickets can be purchased via PayPal, or San Angelo Hispanic Heritage Museum and Cultural Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 24 W. Concho Ave.
