It's still possible to save money the pump, according to AAA

With gas prices not expected to go down any time soon, AAA Texas shared tips drivers can use to save money when buying gas.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Gas prices have hit an all-time high nationwide.

The average price of gasoline hit $4 in Texas, up 62 cents since last week and nearly half an increase from last year.

Drivers in San Angelo are well aware of these soaring prices.

“You're now in this heat, working all day in this heat And then just to give it all away at the gas pumps is not very fun. $4.09 for a gallon of gas. You know, it's hard when you're turning trees all day and prices have to go up,” local landscaper Casey Prather said.

President Joe Biden recently shared his thoughts on these prices, ensuring Americans his administration is doing the best they can to get these prices down.

Until gas drops to more reasonable prices, AAA Texas representative Joshua Zuber said there are still some ways you can save at the pump.

“You want to maintain your vehicle for safety as well as fuel economy. Make a good bet, Betty. Check your battery engine as well as your tires, your tires especially. You want to make sure that they're properly inflated because under-inflated tires, again, can not only be a safety concern leading to a blowout, but can be a real drag on your fuel economy,” Zuber said.

Also, the old myth of turning off your air conditioner to save gas still holds true.

“If you minimize your use of air conditioning, you can save on your fuel economy. But really, it's a matter of how fast you're going. So basically, if you're maybe going under 40, 45 miles per hour up, perhaps having your windows down will help save on your fuel economy," he said.

AAA Texas provided additional tips to save money at the pump:

  • Consolidate trips

  • Use memberships or club cards for discount

  • Pay with cash

  • Price shop

Using AAA Texas tips will potentially make your trip to the gas pump a little less painful.
