Austin drops to No. 40 on 'Best Places to Live' list

Austin remains a desirable place to live according to this index, but other cities that are higher on the list have better "value" ratings.

AUSTIN, Texas — The city of Austin has dropped again on a national list our city used to dominate.

According to U.S. News and World Report, the capital city is now the 40th best place to live in the U.S. Austin held the No. 1 spot on the list from 2017 to 2019. Last year, Austin dropped out of the top 10, coming in at No. 14.

Austin remains a desirable place to live according to this index, but other cities that are higher on the list have better "value" ratings. On this list, "value" is defined as "how comfortably the average resident of each metro area can afford to live within their means."

The capital city remains the No. 1 Texas city on this list.

If you're curious, the top three places to live are Green Bay, Wisconsin; Huntsville, Alabama; and Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina.
