AUSTIN, Texas — Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. could be looking to expand even further in the Austin area.
According to a report from the Austin Business Journal (ABJ), Samsung may build even more in Central Texas, possibly bringing billions more dollars and hundreds more jobs to the Austin area. Last year, Samsung pledged to build a $17 billion fabrication plant in Taylor, and the company has had a presence in North Austin for decades.
The ABJ reports that documents filed on Saturday with both the Taylor and Manor school districts indicate Samsung is seeking additional Chapter 313 incentives, which provide tax breaks to large factories. The report says trustees for each school district are scheduled to separately discuss the applications on Tuesday.
"While we do not have specific plans to build at this time, the Chapter 313 application process is part of our long-term planning to evaluate the viability of potentially building additional fabrication plants in the U.S.," Michele Glaze, director of communications at Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC, told the ABJ.
The meeting agendas for Taylor ISD and Manor ISD do not contain specifics on the scope of any possible expansion, but both school boards are set to consider multiple agreements with Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC.
