ABILENE, Texas — For the seventh year in its history, Abilene Christian University’s Omega Gamma Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, has been named an Honor Chapter for its outstanding activities in 2021-22.
ACU is one of only 10-15 Honor Chapters out of 629 across the country. Every summer, the 629 chapters are asked to submit an annual report detailing their activities and projects from the academic year. For Abilene Christian’s chapter, those included the annual publication of “Hispaniola,” Omega Gamma’s Spanish literary journal; translating documents for several departments across campus; and doing service projects in the community.
Following these submissions, the National Executive Committee chooses the annual Honor Chapters. To receive this honor, the chapter’s projects “must reflect the Sigma Delta Pi mission of honoring excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding and upholding the goals of the society.”
Dr. Beatriz Walker, professor in the Department of Language and Literature, is the adviser for Omega Gamma and significantly contributed to the attainment of this national award, according to a press release from the Sigma Delta Pi society. Walker started Omega Gamma in 2010 and since then, the chapter has received the Honor Chapter designation seven times.
“This means the students in our program are doing great things,” Walker said. “Whatever honor we get is an honor that ACU gets. We are very proud to bring this honor to ACU."
Sigma Delta Pi’s national office is at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and the organization is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies, the nation’s only certifying agency for college and university honor societies.
