ABILENE, Texas — Two people were taken into custody by the Abilene Police Department’s Fraud Unit Friday after officers executed a search warrant at a local hotel.

According to a press release from APD, on Friday, detectives executed the warrant at a hotel room located in the 800 block of East Highway 80.

Lana Murphy, 51, and Bennie Coplin, 39, were taken into custody without incident, according to police. During a search of the room and vehicles, a lever-action shotgun, believed to be stolen, was found.

An additional search revealed that Murphy was in possession of more than 10 pieces of stolen identifying information, which she used to make counterfeit checks and fraudulent credit card accounts. She was also found to be in possession of stolen checks, which she had passed at various Abilene stores.

Other items recovered in the search were marijuana, identifying information of others, a firearm and stolen credit cards. The investigation is ongoing and detectives are working to identify victims.

Murphy has been charged with second degree felony identity theft; third degree felon in possession of a firearm; state jail felony forgery of a financial instrument; and Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Coplin has been charged with state jail felony identity theft and Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
