For the past several years, there's been an influx of capital murder cases in Tom Green County; therefore, the county made an agreement with capital defense attorneys in Lubbock.
Tom Green County Judge Steve Floyd said there are a number of factors that lead to the agreement that will ensure the cases make it to trial. When it comes to capital murder cases, defense attorneys must have specific certifications.
"Our local attorneys kinda allowed their certifications to expire because there was not any work for them to do locally. All of a sudden, we have a little different situation because have multiple incidents that have multiple defendants, well that creates a conflict," Floyd said.
A Capital Defenders Office can only take one defendant in a case. Floyd said the local attorneys are working to renew their certifications.
