Bomb threat at Cactus Hotel being investigated

Officials are asking the public to avoid the area while the matter is investigate

SAN ANGELO — UPDATE: (5:08 p.m.) - The SAPD has advised that the fire marshal said the building is clear.

ORIGINAL STORY: The San Angelo Police Department and the San Angelo Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating an email message received by individuals at the Cactus Hotel.

The email message references the detonation of an explosive device(s), unless the email recipient(s) transfer a sum of money to the sender, according to a media release from the SAPD Thursday afternoon.

In an abundance of caution, public safety officials are conducting security sweeps and evacuating the building.

According to the department, so far, this message doesn’t appear to be authentic or a legitimate threat; and the email(s) resemble a robo-email message that has been circulating throughout the country in an attempt to scam businesses out of money.

“Even though this email threat appears to be a hoax, our agencies take every threat seriously and we will continue to investigate,” the release said.

Officials are asking the public to avoid the area surrounding the Cactus Hotel for the public’s safety as well as to ensure access to emergency vehicles and personnel.

“As always, San Angelo Public Safety Officials want to remind our citizens to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety,” the release said.

This is a developing news story; more information will be posted as soon as it is available.
